Spirituality at Milton St John’s
Spirituality is how we grow on the inside—through our thoughts, feelings, and how we care for others and the world.
It helps us to:
- Wonder about things we can’t always see or explain
- Care for people, nature, and the world around us
- Feel love, joy, sadness, peace, and hope
- Grow on the inside—learning to be kind, brave, thankful, and full of light
We believe that spirituality is a core thread woven through the life of our school. We place great importance on nurturing it—not only for children’s personal development, but also for the growth, wellbeing, and flourishing of everyone in our school community.
We help every child shine through growing in faith, learning with joy, and showing kindness to others. Spirituality helps that light shine even brighter.
How We Nurture Spirituality in School Life
Spirituality can be experienced and encouraged in many ways across the school day. These moments help children to reflect, grow, and connect more deeply with themselves, others, and the world around them.
Through Reflection and Stillness
- Quiet moments in collective worship or class, where children can pause, think, or pray
- Reflection areas in classrooms where children can write thoughts, worries, or thanks
- Opportunities to wonder about life’s big questions
(e.g. “What makes something special?” or “What do we do when we feel sad?”)
Through Nature and the Outdoors
- Forest School, trips and outdoor learning that inspire awe and care for creation
- Observing the seasons, weather, wildlife, and growth in our school grounds
Through Creativity
- Expressing thoughts and feelings through art, music, drama, and dance
- Writing poems or stories that explore emotions, hopes, or life’s big questions
- Exploring symbols, celebrations, and stories from different faiths and cultures
Through Relationships and Community
- Showing kindness, forgiveness, and empathy in friendships and teamwork
- Supporting one another in difficult times and celebrating each other’s successes
- Acts of service, charity work, and involvement in the local community
Through Celebration and Wonder
- Marking key moments in the school year such as Christmas, Easter, Harvest, and special reflection days
- Asking and exploring big questions about life, meaning, and purpose across the curriculum
- Noticing and treasuring moments of awe—like seeing a rainbow, hearing beautiful music, or achieving something new
